THE BIG CHILL - FACEBOOK STYLE by Kim Castillo

How many of you are children of the '80's? You know, acid washed jeans, hair out to there that's stiff as a board from the can of Aquanet you drowned it in, the ability to sing "Shook Me All Night Long" word for word. We remember when Michael Jackson and Tom Cruise were at the top of their game and can recite the Big Mac song in our sleep. We could do the moonwalk and double dutch jump rope.

Another thing that stands out to me about high school in the '80's was the cliques. At my school we had the preps, stoners and the brainy kids. Of course, there were the kids that floated between the groups or weren't really defined. Our school wasn't like in the 1986 movie Lucas where the band kids weren't allowed to hang out with the preps. There was plenty of mingling but there were definite lines.

Why the walk down high school memory lane? Facebook, that's why! I would guess that my graduating class numbered 300. Of that 300 there are 150 of us on Facebook that have reconnected. It’s wonderful! We're having a great time digging out old photos and sharing stories. Twenty years later because of cyberspace, we're all friends. Some of us are just having babies and some of us are grandparents. Some of us have changed so much while others are exactly the same.

Last week one of my best friends came home for a visit. We went for lunch along with another of our closest friends. Of course, we're all on Facebook and that's what led the chatter. One of the things we talked about is how Facebook is resurging high school reunions. Apparently our ten-year reunion wasn't well attended so there wasn't a 15th and as far as I can tell there aren't plans for a 20-year reunion next year. My friend Kathy said she read an article that due to social networking, it’s easier to find school chums than in the past. Since everyone is now able to connect so easily then it makes it possible for reunions to happen. I hope this happens for our class as well!

Tell me-do you enjoy connecting with your former classmates or would you prefer to pretend high school never happened? Have you ever attended a reunion, how was it?

For one of you lucky readers, I'll grab a couple of brand new books from my office stash to send to you! Just leave a comment below to be entered.

There are some fascinating cut-off dates in this article but I don’t know if I see all of them center to heart. There's some validity however I'll take hold opinion till I look into it further. Good article , thanks and we would like extra! Added to FeedBurner as nicely

I have never attended a school reunion; there was only one so far.I was not a child of the 80's; way before.Haven't tried Facebook yet either. I don't reconnect with any of the classmates unless I come across them when in the city.

I wouldn't attend a high school reunion. High School wasn't bad, though; it was just OK.I would like to see a few select people but would not want to see them at a reunion. I would rather do lunch or dinner. Thanks,Tracey D

Laura-that is surprising! It seems like men always stay the same.Lady-congrats on the new grandbaby!!

Hi There! I was one of the quiet ones at my high school; a band geek, smart and non-partier. We just had our 30 year reunion and I didn't go. I had mixed feelings about it anyway. It just happened that my daughter went into labor that day and we were at the hospital. I heard from one of the people who attended that some of them still want to be apart of that high school scene even going to the point of wanting to have a sleepover. Go Figure?? So I guess what I'm saying is that some people never grow up. I do talk to a few on Facebook and it's nice...but life does go on.

Hi Kim,I went to my 10yr and then this year to my 40th. I could recognize more women than men, surprisingly.

Hey Crystal!! Have a fantastic time at the game. Tell them all how you did a marathon! aw, thanks you guys! Its funny but back then I thought I was ugly and so fat. Now I look at me and love my hair and wish I was that "fat". Perspective!!Hi June! I love that-Ordinaries. That fits perfectly. Can't wait to see you at Spring Fling!

Hi Kim,No, I have not been to

Hi Kim,No, I have not been to any HS reunions. I decided that if I went I would just look at the "not very nice" girls and tell them what I should have said back in HS. The kids that, as you said that floated back and forth, well I called them Ordinaries. And that's just what I wrote about in my debut YA, Ordinary Me. Funny how some things don't change from generation to generation.Have a great holiday,Junewww.junesproat.com

Kim, I agree with Gannon

Kim, I agree with Gannon about you looking cute in your high school picture. Am I just getting old or do all high schoolers now look like they are 12?

Hey, Kim!! I can't believe

Hey, Kim!! I can't believe how many friends I have reconnected with thanks to Facebook. It is so nice to be able to see how people are doing, hear about their kids, etc. Thanks to FB, I am going to go watch an alumni basketball game over Christmas. I didn't even know we had one!! :)I wasn't popular, but I had friends and a lot of great memories from high school!!Crystal

Tami-I'm sorry! I wasn't in the popular crowd also but I have some great memories of school. In my sophmore year the boy who had the locker next to me wore Polo. I used to break into his locker and dump his cologne on my jean jacket. Loved that scent!Hey Gannon!! Ok, Italy is much better than a reunion. Hands down!Oh and in case anyone is wondering that is me in high school. LOL

Facebook has been an amazing

Facebook has been an amazing place to reconnect with classmates I haven't seen since our 10 year class reunion. Unfortunately, I missed my 20th--we were living in Italy at the time and I had just been back to the States the month before my reunion, so I couldn't go back. Can't wait for my 30th!I do remember falling down the stairs between classes once, because I was so busy talking. But I never dropped my books. LOL
