Holiday Traditions With Caridad

When I think about this time of year, I always think of the traditions that are being passed down in the family. Things like how we go and chop down the tree together, the shopping day to pick up all the foods we will need for Christmas Eve as well as Christmas Eve itself which is filled with a combination of Italian and Cuban foods.

This year we had to wait to get our tree because our daughter was away at school. But as soon as she was home, we headed to go get the tree. Here are some photos from that event!

This week we’ll be heading up to Union City, home to many Cubans, to pick up some of the ethnic foods that aren’t available in my area. Special pastries, candies, vegetables and even my favorite soda – Ironbeer.

On Christmas Eve, lots of food, friends and family. A wonderful combination. Traditions such as these shape who we are and also shape future generations. As a writer, it’s traditions like these and exploring the traditions of others that also help me create the characters in my stories since it’s important to know where someone comes from in order to make them believable. How about you? Do you have any special holiday traditions you’d like to share?

I am going to give away a copy of FURY CALLS and a SINS OF THE FLESH lunchbag to someone who comments.

We don't do anything too

We don't do anything too special but we let the kids in the family open one gift on Christmas Eve.Then the whole family gets together Christmas Day.There's usually a hockey game on that the guys watch and the ladies get to drinking..lol.Happy Holidays

We have Christmas with the

We have Christmas with the hubby's family the Saturday before Christmas. We open presents with our family Christmas eve morning and havw breakfast with anyone who wants to join in. Christmas day is with may mom, dad, sisters and their family with a big meal, presents and fun. Then we hit the movies in the afternoon or evening!

Our Holiday Tradition is

Our Holiday Tradition is simple but effective, we do not have one exactly anymore.... The family is scattered to the 4 winds and that means mostly everyone who is an adult works the holiday itself so because my little family of 3 is off we spend the 4 days at home. (The other thing would be to have the holiday get together early, no dice the family if off on weekdays and we are only off on weekends...) We set up our tree and trim it the weekend of Thanksgiving, we go out Christmas light lookee looing on Christmas Eve after a lazy day of TV and lunch out. Christmas we have Ham and all the other goodies that I can think of to eat that are not so much traditional fare but family favorites. We at some point on Christmas day exchange presents, watch more bad TV and take it easy in preparation for the weekend of after Christmas shopping and whatever else strikes our fancy to do together....Merry Christmas everyone and sure glad your families still get together and celebrate on the actual date....Jackie B Central Texasjacabur2008[at]gmail[dot]com

This year I'm carrying on the tradition of making the Hungarian Cookies. My Gram used to do it but she passed away in 2004. I haven't had since the Christmas 2003. I was looking for a cookie receipe the other day and found Grams. It was passed down to her from my Great Grandmother who came over on the boat from Hungry. I just hope they turn out as well as Grams.

Hi Caridad, My 'cuban'

Hi Caridad, My 'cuban' husabnd and I love cooking the traditional foods of his childhood. Moros y christianos, pudin de pan, and crocketas(spell?) are our favorite. We also cook and huge turkey and stuffing(my way*grin*). Since I am from the south(hicksville USA) we must have mashed potatoes and green beans. And you might have guessed one of the beverages...sweet tea!!! AHH;-)Feliz NavidadTalina

a tradition that Mom and I

a tradition that Mom and I started many years ago is still carried on even though Mom is gone.Because the day is hectic what with the cooking of the turkey, all food prep, dishes to do after the ladies are tired. We go to a room by ourselves(no men)and exchange gifties that can be bought or homemade. It is a time for just us ladies. Everyone that came into the family over the years has wanted in on this and everyone enjoys it.

The older generation, which

The older generation, which is no longer with us, had all the traditional get-to-gethers for the holidays. Now we are the oldest generation and trying to have new traditions. Our children aren't ready, yet, to give up the old ones. They just want new homes to have them in because most of the younger generation are still unmarried. So, this year, it is our turn to host the Christmas dinner (for anyone who is not snowed out). None of the family lives near us and everyone has to travel. We tried to get them all to go to Florida or someplace warm, but it didn't work!!! :>)

The one tradition I always

The one tradition I always make sure to adhere to is to watch The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas every year on TV. Though Christmas tends to be different every year, what with families growing and expaninding and coming together, it always feels like Christmas when I watch those two shows. I remember watching them as a child and, each time I watch them, I'm drawn back in years to the time when I was a child and first saw The Grinch and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Those two tv shows always sum up Christmas for me. Silly but true! :)

We normally get ready for

We normally get ready for Christmas by driving around and looking at the town's Christmas lights the day before Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve we normally just have a regular day and Christmas day do a big dinner with gifts first thing in the morning and then enjoying all our new goodies throughout the day. This year we will be going to my sister's house for both Chrismas Eve and Christmas dinner. Hopefully it is fun!

Thanks for sharing your

Thanks for sharing your traditions. In our Cuban-Italian-American household, we celebrate Christmas Eve with a mix of foods and cultures. We talk a lot, eat a lot, take a break for opening gifts and then talk and eat some more! The night usually ends pretty late and hubby and I clean up the dishes. Four hours later, our daughter is usually up and asking to see what Santa left! (Even at 20!) I love this time of year and all the special ways that we celebrate.

Normally, we have our family

Normally, we have our family come over Christmas Eve, have a wonderful dinner and family time which bleeds into Christmas morning and the entire next day or two. Which means I have a house full of overnight guests for 2 to 3 days. But we love it.

My Mum & I always go around

My Mum & I always go around the city to take in all the Christmas decorations. Merry Christmas Anna Shah Hoques7anna@yahoo.ca

My husband was not raised

My husband was not raised Catholic, so there were no prohibitions against meat the day before Christmas. His family had a specific dinner which he perpetuates. Tiny meatballs with green Jello--weird--ham, only vegetables that he likes and cheesecake and cookies. I preferred a simple meatless meal, but it doesn't work any more. The meatballs are like rabbit pellets, the lime Jello bizarre...the cheesecake is good, though. We do sing carols and Christmas songs all day long, though, and since we all join in, that's nice.Almost makes up for the rabbit pellets.

We open our presents on

We open our presents on Christmas morning. My daughter usually picks me up and I go to her house around 6 AM to watch my 6 and 4 year old grandkids tear into their gifts. Then I go to my oldest daughters and watch them tear into their stuff. Then we all go to my sisters and the kids get more stuff and we sit down to a huge meal. All in all, it's an exhausting day. But I wouldn't trade it for anything. This year we have our littlest gift to celebrate, my granddaughter born at 23 weeks and truly a miracle. She weighed 1 pound 2.7 ounces at birth and was 11 1/2 inches long. She spent 4 months in the NICU and is now a whopping 8 1/2 pounds. They say she should catch up in size by the time she is two. She is technically 9 months old but they adjust that for her 4 months early birth. So we truly are blessed this year. I hope everyone has a blessed holiday season.seriousreader at live dot com
