Night Blooming: The Chronicles of Saint-Germain
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro

Warner Books
November 2002

At the forced invitation of 8th century Germanic king Karl-lo-Magne (Charlemagne), Hiermon Ragoczy de Santus Germainius, a dark and strange man rumored to have traveled to many far places, makes the dangerous journey to France. He is called to validate the authenticity of the king's newly purchased maps, but unbeknownst to Karl-lo-Magne, Ragoczy's knowledge stems from centuries of being chased from these countries, rather than traveling through them. Despite his longing for peace, he yields to Karl-lo-Magne. What he does not expect, though, is to meet the albino woman, Gynethe Mehaut, who shares his curse of solitude. Showing signs of stigmata, she seeks peace from the church. But when she is taken to Rome, accusations of witchcraft fly, and she is left with a difficult choice-one that even Ragoczy cannot deny.

RondaT - I'm ducking out because I only had a minute to chat and don't want to disrupt things. See you all later
BadBarb - ?
CQY - Night Blooming is the 15th in the Saint Germain cycle, set in the court of Karl-lo-Magne
Mac - Hiya, Ronda
Mac - That'll teach me to type faster next time.
CQY - Saint-Germain comes there and becomes involved with the albino stigmatic, Gynethe Mehaut
CQY - Eventally he takes her to Rome for the Pope to settle her fate
CQY - The period is very rich and barbaric
Cissy - wow, sounds intense, Chelsea...
CQY - And, of course things don't go well -- if they did, I wouldn't have a story
Cissy - of course!
CQY - By the way, the book is dedicated to Wiley
Cissy - wow, really??
Cissy - congrats, Wiley
CQY - Also, Olivia puts in an appearance.
WileyS - thanks again
CQY - Yep -- this one is Wiley's
Cissy - Okay, let's go on to questions - ladies, break them out. I know you have them! If you have questions for Chelsea, just type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
Cissy - BadBarb has the first question (no one in line)
BadBarb - ?
BadBarb - oh sorry Cissy thought you missed my first ?
CQY - Do I have to guess?
BadBarb - Hi Chelsea how much of your time is taken up with research?
BadBarb - congrats Wiley
CQY - It depends on the book -- a minimum of six months, a maximum of a year
CQY - of course, I work on other projects while I research, or I couldn't pay the rent
Cissy - what about this book, Chelsea?
BadBarb - brb anyone want any?
CQY - This one took about eight months, and a month to outline, and six months to write, a bit longer than usual
Cissy - forgive my ignorance, Chelsea, but is The Chronicles of Saint-Germain a series?
CQY - Yes, there are sixteen books in the cycle, fifteen novels so far, and one short story collection
WileyS - ?
CQY - The sixteenth hasn't been published yet, of course
Cissy - oh wow, Chelsea, I'm definitely out of the loop here. For the benefit of those like me, can you bring us up to speed on the series?
BadBarb - ?
CQY - It started in 1978 with Hotel Transylvania, then The Palace, Blood Games, Path of the Eclipse, Tempting Fate, the Saint-Germain Chronicles
Celeste -
BadBarb - hi granma
Cissy - Hi granma Welcome to our chat with Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. We're talking with Chelsea about her new book, Night Blooming - of The Chronicles of Saint-Germain. We'll be operating on protocol, so if you have questions for Chelsea, just type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
CQY - After a gap of seven years, Darker Jewels, Better in the Dark, Mansions of Darkness, Writ in Blood, Blood Roses, Communion Blood, A Feast in Exile, and Night Blooming. Wiley, have I left anything out?
WileyS - I think they are all there
WileyS - plus Midnight Harvest next year
granma16 - hello new at this forgive any mistakes
CQY - There are also associated books, the three Oliva books and two Madelains
Cissy - no problem, granma16
BadBarb - ooh granma is a virgin chatter
Cissy - no too many virgin granma's around
Cissy - WileyS has the next question (BadBarb, Celeste in line)
Mac - lol
granma16 - oh gracious me. easy girls
vaddra - hi all
Cissy - Hi vaddra Welcome to our chat with Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. We're talking with Chelsea about her new book, Night Blooming - of The Chronicles of Saint-Germain. We'll be operating on protocol, so if you have questions for Chelsea, just type ? and I'll call on you in turn.
WileyS - My question was has Stealth Press set the dates for the reprints of Blood Games, Path of the Eclipse, and Saint-Germain Chronicles. The website does not have info
WileyS - about the reprint dates yet. Just wondered if you had heard
mary f - Hello Vad
CQY - So far as I know, Stealth isn't doing any more reprints, but I have no formal reversion from them. On the other hand, Warner will reprint Blood Games next year.
vaddra - hey Mary
WileyS - thanks
CQY - And, next spring, The Palace. Talk about the folly of youth returning to haunt one -- but I do like The Palace
Cissy - BadBarb has the next question (Celeste in line)
BadBarb - Chelsea is there any one of these books that is a personal favorite? Hi Vaddra!!! and yeah on the reprints!!!!
CQY - Always -- the next one!
vaddra - hey BadBarb
BadBarb - can you tell us about the next one?
CQY - The one I'm researching right now -- working title Dark of the Sun about the worldwide environmental catastrophe of 535-536 AD
CQY - But, of course, Warner hasn't bought it yet
Cissy - I don't think you have to worry too much though, Chelsea
CQY - From your lips to my editor's ear!
Cissy - Celeste has the next question (no one in line)
CQY - Saint-Germain has only recently moved to Warner, so nothing's certain.
BadBarb - ?
Celeste - Chelsea, have all your books been in the Le Comte de Saint-Germain series or if not, have they all been fantasy/horror?
CQY - No, far from it. I've done mysteries, too, young adult, science fiction, westerns, you name it. I've sold book #73 and I've been writing professionally for 34 years
Celeste - sorry for my ignorance
Cissy - see we're all learning stuff tonight!
CQY - Among all of it, four books of occult non-fiction, too
BadBarb - hehe Celeste, I think fell out of her chair
Cissy - ?
Cissy - BadBarb has the next question (Cissy in line)
mary f - ?
BadBarb - Chelsea do you have a favorite scene you would like to share with us?
CQY - Celeste, no need to apologize. Most of my relatives don't know, either
CQY - Actually, I'm probably the last person to advise you on that. It's much too close to the whole process for me to know.
CQY - When I work on anything, I'm much too close to it, and afterwards, I'm much too close to the next project to tell you what a favorite is
vaddra - ?
Cissy - Cissy has the next question (mary f in line)
Cissy - Chelsea, what's your favorite genre to write in?
CQY - But I do keep coming back to history and horror
Cissy - well... but if you've done mysteries, young adult, westerns and occult... those are some pretty wide variations
Cissy - well that would be an answer
CQY - They're all just various ways to tell a story, and mainly, I like to tell stories.
Cissy - that makes sense
Cissy - maryf has the next question (vaddra in line)
mary f - Chelsea, What made you pick that historical setting?
CQY - If you mean the Carolingian setting of Night Blooming, it was the state of the culture that supported the story. For me, the environment, including the culture, is a tertiary character, and this book was no exception
Celeste -
Cissy - vaddra has the next question (Celeste in line)
vaddra - Chelsea,I have a couple questions first, what kind of sci-fi do you write. 2. do you write paranormals, and 3. do you write under your own name or a different name?I have to admit I don't think I've read any of your books but I'm off to the book store this weekend and I'd like to pick up a couple
CQY - This kind of story could only happen in a culture with certain expectations and structures, which that society had,
CQY - I do some of the mysteries with Bill Fawcett as Quinn Fawcett. I tend to dystopic s-f, most of which is out of print, although there is a new edition of False Dawn out from Babbage Press.
CQY - As to the paranormals, some would argue that horror falls in that category.
Cissy - Celeste has the next question (no one in line)
deagling has timed out.
WileyS - !
vaddra - thank you Chelsea
CQY - Incidentally, I think that Warner deserves much thanks for the really beautiful covers on Hotel Transylvania and Night Blooming
Celeste - Chelsea, I've already admitted my ignorance about your book (even though I recognized your name right away....can you tell me of the main character in you Le Comte de Saint-Germain series has romantic encounters (other than probably sucking blood from some damsels neck) and is he a sympathic vampire (not totally evil)?
Cissy - comment, wiley?
CQY - Saint-Germain is the Good Guy -- it's people who cause the trouble. He's honorable, compassionate, intelligent, cultured, and very attentive about his partners.
Cissy - he sounds wonderful
CQY - A lot of people seem to think so.
WileyS - I was going to say that I'd be happy to send a complete list of Quinn's books to anyone interested, just email me at Wiley20658@aol.com
Celeste - I definitely need to read some of the series then.
CQY - Heaps of thanks, Wiley!
WileyS - I
Cissy - Tell us again what you're working on now, Chelsea?
Cissy - go ahead, Wiley
Celeste - It wasn't that long ago that some of by cyber friends got me to try the Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, and I was hooked even though they are not romances per se (which is fine as I also enjoy myteries)
CQY - At the moment, I'm working on a proposal for a young adult novel, doing reseach on Dark of the Sun and working on another Quinn Fawcett with Bill.
CQY - Tha and three short stories
WileyS - LOL did not mean to type extra I, sorry
Cissy - And NIGHT BLOOMING is on shelves now, right?
CQY - I sincerely hope so!
CQY - So is the Hotel Transylvania reprint
Cissy - Chelsea, hard to believe, but our hour's up! Thanks so much for chatting with us tonight!
CQY - If you want more of them, buy these so Warner will understand
CQY - Thanks for having me
WileyS - thanks for the chat!
WileyS - thanks for the chat!
CQY - Call me
vaddra - thanks CHelsea
Cissy - Thanks again, Chelsea!
CQY - You're more than welcome
WileyS - will do
