Genie - Hi Susanna
Cel - Jo, I've got to check your web site out more often.
Mari - Hi Susanna
Stacey - Nanette, do you have a Walden's near you?
Sara - Jo, would say a few words, self intro, that kind of thing? the floor is yours!!
Jo B - Bad Waldenbook, bad!<G>
Stacey - Hi Susanna
shy - Stacey!!!! Good to see you
Susanna - Hey everyone !
Jo B - Hi, I don't know how familiar everyone is with me and my books....
Nanette - yes
bryony - If you're in withdrawal Cel, I might be able to get the book down here for you.
Cel - Hi Shy
shy - Hi Jo and everyone
Jo B - one thing isthat I'm a lousy typist, so going fast is guaranteed to provide lots of typos<G>
Cissy - Please type ? to get in line with your questions and Sara will call on you in turn.
Cel - Thanks bryony, but I think I can survive.
Nanette - yeah JO BEVERLY
Mari - We encourage typos here
Stacey - I found UNWILLING BRIDE at Walden's Saturday
Jo B - I'm one of those people who wrote stories as a child, and I always wanted to be an aouthor...
Jo B - t I could never figure out how.
shy - WE ignore all typos Jo dont' worry about it.
Jo B - In the '80s there were more talks on how to write romance, so I picked it up again..
Jo B - d my first book sold in 1988
Nanette - I'll check there tomorow
Jo B - I've pubbed 20 now.
Jo B - y first books were traditional regency romance.
JoanV - logged on - 12/6 at 9:09pm EST
Jo B - I started the Rogues, which were published as regency, but were more like historicals today. Because then there wasn't a regency historical niche, believe it or not.
Nanette -
Mari - Hi Joan
Cel - ?
Sara - JoanV, welcome, tonight's guest is Jo Beverley. We are following protocol, so type a "?" to be put in line. You may ask your question when it is your turn. Thanks!
Stacey - Hi Joan
bryony - Joan
Jo B - Then in a sense, I went back to my first love, which was medieval romance, but the pub. wouldn't buy it if I didn't promise a regency historical, because they were hot. (Go figure.<G>
Jo B - So I did, but then I realized I wanted to write it as Georgian, and the Mallorens were born.
Jo B - Is that enough intro? I'd rather answer questions?
Sara - ah, the Mallorens
Susanna - Hey Joan !
Cissy - That's great, Jo, thanks!
Sara - that is good, Jo. I didn't realize you had 20 books out. I have to do some research!!
Sara - Nanette has the first question, followed by Cel
Jo B - The early trad regencies are hard to find, I think, but all but one were out in library hardcover first, so check the library.
Mari -
Sara - oh, I have the early regencies, I think I am missing the ones in between those and the Mallorens
Sara - Nanette go ahead
Jo B - I do have one SF story pubbed, which has recently been reissued in THE BEST OF WRITERS OF THE FUTURE. But it's a very short story in a big book.
Jo B - I also have, I think, 7 novellas.
Nanette - jo i know the ROGUES are being reissuied, any chance of te other 1st books being reissuied...they are impossible to find
Jo B - I like doing novellas as a change of pace from the bigger books. There are some stories that can only be told right in a shorter form.
Jo B - Nanette, which 1st books do you mean?
JadeStar66 - ?
Nanette - and very,very expensive
Jo B - Do you mean the traditional regencies?
Geney - logged on. - 12/6 at 9:15pm EST
Jo B - I do have the rights back to them, so we're hoping to get them out again. But it prob. won't be for a couple of years, the way these things go.
jill - - 12/6 at 9:16pm EST
Sara - Geney, welcome, tonight's guest is Jo Beverley. We are following protocol, so type a "?" to be put in line. You may ask your question when it is your turn. Thanks!
jill - Hi all!!!
Geney - darn PC, I did not perform an illegal function!!!!
Nanette - dedidred and don juan, whybrooks(sp) bride ect.
shy - Hi Geney and Jill!
Cel - Hi Jill
Jo B - Ah, those are the trad. Regencies, yes.
Geney - Hi Jill
Jen L - logged on. - 12/6 at 9:17pm EST
Sara - Cel is next (Mari, JadeStar66 in line)
Mari - Hi Geney and Jill
Jo B - s I said, check your library and Inter Library Loan. There are some out there in hardcover. For the rest, I'm working on it.
Stacey - Hi Jill
Sara - Jen L, welcome, tonight's guest is Jo Beverley. We are following protocol, so type a "?" to be put in line. You may ask your question when it is your turn. Thanks!
Geney - Hi Jen
Susanna - Hey Jill!
Cel - Jo, I have two of your hardcovers you wrote for Walker and Co (Emily and the Dark Angel and Lord Wraybourne's Betrothed) and I must say I enjoyed them both, but that was before I realized who you were (I'm sorry ) Question, are there only 5 books in the Malloren series (because that's all I have)?
Nanette - thanks, i really love your books, and would like to read the first ones
Mari - Hi Jen
Susanna - Hey Jen !
Jen L - HI everyone
Sara - Jen, welcome, tonight's guest is Jo Beverley. We are following protocol, so type a "?" to be put in line. You may ask your question when it is your turn. Thanks!
Jo B - Right, Cel. 5 Malloren books.
Stacey - Hi Jen
Jo B - Though I plan to do some spin offs.
Jo B - Thanks, Nanette, for the question and for liking my books.
Sara - Mari is next ( JadeStar66 in line)
Cel - Oh great and I'm not about to part with my Waler & Co hardcovers.
Mickey - logged on. - 12/6 at 9:19pm EST
Mari - I know I ask this a lot, but it amazes me how writers find there characters. Do your characters talk to you?
Sara - ah, while Mari is composing, can you tell us about the possible spinoffs?
josephine - logged on - 12/6 at 9:19pm EST
Geney - hello Mickey
Cel - Hi Mickey and wb josephine
Jo B - Cel, I'd think those were pretty good things to have. Only about 2000 were printed.
Sara - mickey and josephine, welcome, tonight's guest is Jo Beverley. We are following protocol, so type a "?" to be put in line. You may ask your question when it is your turn. Thanks!
Stacey - Hi Mickey and Josephine
Nanette - how did you know i was gonna' ask cel
Geney - hi josephine
josephine - hi
Jo B - My characters frequently don't talk to me. Because they're annoyed with me.<G>
Mari - Hi Mickey and wb Josephine
Cel - *snicker* Geney
Cissy - lol, Jo
Geney - - 12/6 at 9:20pm EST
Jo B - I don't know where my characters come from, either. I don't use movie stars etc.
Mari - LOL.
Sara - really annoyed, Jo? or just a little?
Mickey - Hi Jo B and eveyone else
Jo B - I sort of open the door and see who comes through....
Jo B - There was an SF writer who posited an alternate universe peopled by characters from fiction....
Nanette - really GREAT doors
Jo B - My husband says I don't want to meet any of my heroes in an alley on a dark night after what I put them through.<G>
Sara - he probably has a GOOD point, Jo!
Cissy - if you do just remind them you also got them a lot of good sex!
Sara - JadeStar66 is next - no one else is in line
Jo B - They don't stay annoyed, but they get sort of cold and unhelpful if I try to make them do things that are out of character.
JadeStar66 - How much time do you spend doing research and creating characters before starting a book, or do you do it as the story unfolds?
Sara - oooh, excellent point, Cissy. Jo! remember that -- at least for the males
Mari - Thank you
Jen L - ?
Jo B - Yeah, good sex and a happy ending. What's to complain about? A few wounds....<G>
Mickey - - 12/6 at 9:23pm EST
Sara - easily healed, no big deal!!
Jo B - I do research, but I don't really plan characters before I start. I get a situation and a bit about the character. The surface, so to speak. Then I learn about them as I write, which is the fascinating thing.
Sara - Jen L is next - no one else is in line
Jo B - In the novella I have coming out next year, the hero is a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars. The dashing do-or-die sort.....
jill - ?
Cel - ?
Mari -
Nanette -
Jo B - I discover that he's also an artist of sorts who's been sketching army life and his colleagues all those years. Who would have guessed?
shy - I love the Napoleonic war sort.
Sara - jill is next (Cel, Mari, Nanette are in line)
Sara - so, they just snuck this on you, huh? I like that!
Jo B - Shy, all three stories next year are soldierss. First time I've done soldier heroes in the regency.
Sara - Jen L is next
Cissy - I can just see them nudging you... "by the way, you *do* know I'm an artist, right?"
shy - Sounds great
Jo B - One, just to be different, is in the Quartermaster General's Department.
jill - How much time do you spend researching a book and what kind of sources do you use?
Jo B - Cissy, nah. He just produces pictures at a crucial point with that "You didn't know?" look.<G>
jill - Oops!! Didn't mean to butt in line.
Cissy - lol, even better
Sara - oh, a quartermaster? the logistics? the meals, ammunition, tents? wow!!
JadeStar66 - that would have been my next question...thanks jill for asking
Sara - well, jen is hiding so you were up next Jill
Jo B - Jill, I stick to three periods, which I've researched a lot over the years. (I have a degree in English history as well. ANd I am English, born and bred, which helps.)...
Sara - Jo, did you see, Jill's question?
Jo B - So I don't have to do a lot of general research up front, rather the specifics. Like the army for these three stories....
Sara - Cel is next (Mari, Nanette are in line)
Jen L - I seem to be having technical difficulties (first time in this chat and all, so I'll pass my turn for now. Sorry...
Jo B - then as I write, things always come up. Like the weather in 1816, which was the "year with no summer" because of the volcano in Sumatra or whereever...
Jo B - t wasn't nearly as bad in England as in North America.
Cel - Jo, when is your next new book coming out (not a reissue) and I think you already told us what it's about, right?
Jo B - Yes, Sara, on the QM, but they also did a lot of investigative work to do with thievery and mayhem in the army. Interesting people all around.
Sara - Jen L, do you need help?
Jo B - Cel, there are three stories next year....
Susanna - ?
Jo B - First is The Demon's Mistress, in a collection called IN PRAISE OF YOUNGER MEN. (I happen to like my heroes young, so this was my idea.<G>
Cissy - Jen, if it's easier, just go ahead and type out your question and we'll get it in
Cel - LOL Jo
Sara - see, about the QM, that would be interesting, cause my dh was in the computing section in the 70s and there was all kinds of stuff going on that no one knows about! cool things
Jo B - That's in March. In May, The Dragon's Bride. Which links into the Rogues....
Jo B - In August, The Devil's Heiress, which links into An Unwilling Bride.
Jo B - The three heroes are what I'm calling Three Guys Called George.<G>
JadeStar66 - good night all.. baby fell asleep in my arms.. and they're getting numb
Cel - Oh wow, Jo....we will be in heaven next year.
Sara - night, Jade, thanks for coming
Cel - Night Jade
