New anthology up for pre-order!

I mentioned in my last letter that I have partnered with three other authors to write an anthology set in London at the end of the Regency period. This was a fun project, and I hope you will take a look. An excerpt can be found on my website.

Dressed to Kiss features 4 novellas connected in time, place and characters.

Once renowned for creating the most envied gowns in London, Madame Follette's dressmaking shop has fallen far out of fashion. The approaching coronation of King George IV offers a chance to reclaim former glory by supplying stunning new wardrobes to the most glittering society in Regency England. In the face of long-held secrets, looming scandals, and the potential ruin of their shop, the dressmakers of Follette's are undaunted, not even by the most unexpected complication of all: true love.

My novella is titled The Duke's Dressmaker: When the Duke of Barrowmore walks into the dress shop, Selina Fontaine assumes her secret identity will be compromised. Four years ago this man's brother abandoned her to scandal, and she holds the duke responsible. To her amazement the duke is more interested in pursuing her than exposing her, however!

I was honored to have my medieval historical romance By Possession included in Bookriot's 100 must read romances. This remains one of my most loved backlist titles. If you are not familiar with it, you can check out an excerpt and information about the book at https://www.madelinehunter.com/books/bypossession.php#excerpt.

I was on Twitter in early August, and stumbled upon this cute article on the website Bustle that made use of The Wicked Duke. I hope she enjoyed it enough to read more romances, since it was the first one she had ever tried. Talk about pressure!

Thanks to everyone who bought The Wicked Duke, it made the USAToday list. I was sorry to see that trilogy end, but I am happily at work on the next one, with a deadline for book #1 looming. I will share more about it in my next newsletter.

Recipe for a Hot Summer Day

I first remember my mother making this when I was a child and we lived in Virginia—without air conditioning! There were days that were so hot and humid we tried not to move and the last thing anyone wanted was to create more heat with a stove or grill.

I do not even have a title for this family recipe, but I think I will call it Salad Nicoise Hoagies even though it lacks some of the ingredients of a real salad nicoise. Like many of the recipes I share you can expand the ingredients to serve more people, and the seasoning is to taste.

You will need long rolls, of your preference. I like crusty Italian rolls that are very fresh. You may prefer softer hoagie or sausage rolls. Plan at least one per person. Some people may want two especially if the rolls are on the small side, because this is not a heavy meat and cheese hoagie.

In a bowl, cut up good, flavorful ripe tomatoes. Beefsteak are good, or any bought from a farmers' market that you know have full flavor. Cut enough wedges (about 1/2 inch wide at the skin) to generously fill the number of rolls that you plan to use. For four people, it would be about 4 to 6 depending on the size of the tomatoes.

Then thinly cut sweet onions (Vidalia or other sweet variety) and mix with the tomatoes. I would use one average size onion for 4-5 tomatoes, but all of this is "to taste." Use at least a little onion even if you don't want/plan to eat them.

Now add drained canned tuna. Use solid white albacore if you don't like a strong tuna taste, or the cheaper variety if that works for you. I would use two cans if you are planning a meal for 4.

Sprinkle the contents of the bowl with salt and a little pepper. Then add dry basil and oregano to taste (or fresh if you have it). Sprinkle about 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder too. Stir.

Drizzle olive oil (virgin or extra virgin preferred) over the contents in the bowl. You will not need more than about 1/4 cup. Start with that and see if you need more.

Stir. Let sit for about 10 minutes. The liquid from the tomatoes will mix with the oil and herbs to create a dressing that is delicious.

Cut the rolls down the center, create pockets by removing some of the bread inside, and heap in the tomato/onion/tuna mixture. The resulting sandwich is very refreshing, and you will find yourself using that bread you removed to sop up the dressing. Along with some fresh fruit and maybe some cheese on the side, it makes a complete summer meal.

You could add a thin slice of fresh mozzarella cheese to the sandwich, but I personally prefer it without. You also could add some small black olives. And of course it can all be served as a salad with bread on the side instead of in rolls.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!
